Short weekend

This weekend turned out to be a rather short weekend for us. My sister was in town for a conference starting Wednesday and she left today. Some what of a surprise, she stayed with us Saturday after her conference finished up until I ran her to the airport around noon today.

My sister, Mary Jo, was staying down town at the Hyatt Regency where the conference was being hosted. Since travel time from Lewisville to downtown Dallas is considerable, I made reservations to have dinner downtown Wednesday at Fuse, a Tex-Asian place. Yes. A Tex-Asian place.

So this Tex-Asian place, Fuse. My sister doesn’t drink, so I did not partake in their interesting wine list, which was a good thing, since navigating around reunion tower takes a combination of luck determination to get where you want to go. Brook had a very dry Reisling, which does not seem like the wisest choice, considering both Tex and Asian can have some heat to their spice and a sweeter Reisling pairs well with that kind of spice. Also, another mistake in my eyes, although the girls loved it, was a slice of cucumber in the ice water. I cannot stand the taste of raw cucumber, but everyone else thought it was a great way to serve ice water. Blah.

Ok, finally, the food. The food was good all around. We started with the brisket potstickers. That definitely was Tex-Asian, and they were decent. Good flavor, I had qualms with the details of the prep, but they were tolerable. I thought the pot stickers were over fried and under steamed, making the wanton a little too tough, and the brisket inside was a little to dry. The brisket was not dry to the taste, but if you have lived long in Texas, then on more then one occasion, you have had brisket that is close to melt in your mouth. The brisket had a firmer texture, aka, not as much fat, than I expected.

Main course, were trout for my sister, sushi volcano for my wife and snapper for me. I am not a big seafood person, but I have had several well prepare seafood meals lately and this was one. My snapper was nice and flaky, but the best was the rice is was served on. The rice was a short grain with pecans. It was great. After this meal, I am going to make more of an effort to go out and have fish at restaurants that know how to prepare fish.

I wish I could detail what everyone else had, but they didn’t share. I believe we were all members of the clean plate club.

Part of the reason for going to Fuse, was that the menu had no real flour dependencies, so Brook could eat just about anything and Mary Jo, who is on a low carb diet, could eat whatever they wanted. Over all, everyone was very happy with the meal and the service.

That was Wednesday, which had nothing to do with my weekend really, other than Mary Jo was in town. Her conference ended at 12:30 Saturday, and I went to pick her up in Dallas. She came back to the house and we played Wii until it was time for dinner. I think she got about an hour of Wii fit training in, plus a few tries at making herself younger at Wii Fit age test.

Dinner was PF Chang’s, another choice to accommodate gluten intolerance and dieting but not suck for me. The excitement of the evening was when a birthday party occupied the table next to ours, with several candidates for Hot Chicks with Douchbags. Sadly, we were not prepared with cameras.

Sunday was more Wii and some lunch before heading out to the airport. Brook and I are not used to guests, so we have pretty much lounged around doing nothing since Mary Jo left.

Why a short weekend? For anti-social’s like us, having guests completely changes the weekend. It no longer seems like a weekend anymore.
