Sprouts and affordable wine
Flower mound has a new farmer’s market store called Sprouts (Think Whole Foods or Central Market on a smaller scale). Fresh produce and dairy are cheaper at Sprouts then Tom Thumb and they are only about two minutes further away, so I will be a frequent shopper.
Sprouts has a small selection of wine from $7 to $30/bottle. Brook and I are drinking a few bottles of wine a month now, so I thought I would give Sprouts cheap wine a try. They have a good selection under $10, which beats costco. There were two recent finds I was very happy with.
A little background on my wine tastes. I don’t like oaky. I don’t know enough to describe what I do like, and when I do try, someone will point me to a wine that is the opposite of what I described and I will love it. But oaky is definately something I don’t like.
Papio 2004 Cabernet Savignon was a great table wine, and I am pretty sure it was one of the $7 finds. It wasn’t oaky, had a nice flavor that wasn’t over powering, and it was good the next day. A problem I have had is a bottle of wine will be great the first day, but less than great after the first meal.
Covey Run Riesling is the second wine. This was a great wine, and was probably $15 or so. Riesling is a favorite of Brook, which is why I picked it up, not because it was cheap, but I am very happy I did. Bright crisp flavors of apricots and peaches would stand up against most meals. I wouldn’t serve it with steak, but seafood, poultry or pork will more than likely be an easy match. Typically, I prefer a red, but this wine was really enjoyable.
